Dee Dee Warwick was a soul singer that received recognition for the performances that she did with her older sister Dionne Warwick as well as the songs she performed on her own. She died Saturday at a nursing home in Essex County. She was 63 years old. For months she has been sick. The doctors said that her sister was with her in the end.

Warwick had many hit songs that were on the R&B and soul charts both in the 1960’s and 1970’s. She also was a Grammy Award nominee two times and was a backup singer for Wilson Picket and Aretha Franklin before she began to sing solo.

She is a cousin of Whitney Houston who was born in Newark. When she was a teenager she began to sing with her older sister during the late 1950’s. The two performed together as The Gospelaires and also sang with the Drinkard Singers. This group featured aunts and uncles of Warwick’s.
